Understanding your rights under Massachusetts dog bite law
Massachusetts generally follows a strict liability rule for injuries caused by dogs. This means you typically do not have to prove that the dog had bitten someone before or that the owner knew the dog was dangerous.
Liability may also extend to a keeper-someone who had care, custody, or control of the dog- and Massachusetts law provides additional protections for children under seven in cases involving alleged trespassing or provocation. Who can be responsible for a Dog Bite?

Liability after a dog bite may extend beyond the dog owner. Under Massachusetts law, a keeper or caretaker, such as a dog walker, pet sitter, kennel, veterinarian, or another person exercising control over the dog, may also be responsible. In certain circumstances, a landlord or property owner may face a separate negligence claim, while kennels, veterinary facilities, and other businesses may present additional liability and insurance considerations.
